9th Annual NYPD Memorial 5K Run
Sunday, May 16th, 2010 10:13 AMCongratulations to all the runners and walkers who participated in the 9th Annual NYPD Memroial 5K Run. There were more than 1,500 finishers.
Special praise goes out to overall male winner Police Officer Jose Benitez who finished in a time of 16:07 and overall female winner Maria Lauretani in a time of 18:30.
Our top Law Enforcement awards were given to Police Officer William Hansler, who was right on the heels of the winner in second place, with a time of 16:16. The first place female Law Enforcement was won by Police Officer Jaline Bernier in a time of 20:51.
Each year on the Sunday following National Peace Officers' Memorial Day on May 15 the NYPD Running Club is honored to bring together Law Enforcement Officers and the community, to pay tribute to the more than 750 NYPD Officers who have been killed in the line of duty. In a continued effort to honor our fallen comrades we gather for a short prayer at the NYC Police Memorial Wall in Battery Park City, followed by a 5K Run, a Children's Fun Run, and a free barbeque for all participants.
In addition to this event being a great way to honor our fallen conrades, we also raise money for our annual NYPD Memorial Scholarship Fund. We are honored to give college scholarship grants each year to children and/or grand children of our fallen brothers and sisters.
This year we gave away eight scholarships totaling $13,000.
